Principal Investigators

Nathan McClintock is Associate Professor of Urban Studies at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS). He was an Associate Professor of  Urban Studies & Planning at Portland State University when much of this research was conducted. His theoretical and applied work on urban political ecology, environmental justice, and urban agriculture has appeared in a range of geography, planning, and food studies journals, and in several edited volumes. He is an editor of Urban Geography.

Christiana Miewald is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geography at Simon Fraser University.  Her recent research has focused on the intersections of food security and housing, harm reduction and health.  She has also worked on issues of local food production such as community gardening and urban farming in Vancouver, BC.

Eugene McCann is University Professor of Geography at Simon Fraser University.  An urban political geographer, he researches policy mobilities, urban policy-making, development and planning.  He has co-edited and co-authored three books and numerous articles and book chapters.  He is managing editor of Environment & Planning C: Politics & Space.

Research Assistants

  • ​Laura Combs received her MURP from PSU in 2017, and is a planner for the City of Hillsboro, Oregon.
  • Amy Coplen received her PhD in urban studies at PSU in 2019, and is the founder of Cultivate Consulting.
  • Dillon Mahmoudi received his PhD in urban studies from PSU in 2017. He is Assistant Professor of Geography and Environmental Systems at UMBC.
  • ​Eric Pledger received his BA in geography from SFU in 2016, and now works as a GIS analyst in France.
  • Michael Simpson received his MURP from PSU in 2014 and PhD in geography from UBC in 2019. He is Lecturer in the School of Geography & Sustainable Development at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.
